Janina Winkler kommer fr\u00e5n \u00d6stberlin – och hon var den f\u00f6rsta studenten fr\u00e5n DDR som \u00e5kte p\u00e5 utbyte till USA med STS. N\u00e4r Janina \u00e5kte till Springfield, Illinois sommaren 1990 hade Berlinmuren \u00e4nnu inte varit nere i ett \u00e5r och \u00d6st- och V\u00e4sttyskland hade \u00e4nnu inte \u00e5terf\u00f6renats. Hennes mamma l\u00e5nade pengarna till Janinas programavgift fr\u00e5n v\u00e4nner i v\u00e4st. "STS blev v\u00e4ldigt f\u00f6rv\u00e5nade den g\u00e5ngen och sa att jag var den f\u00f6rsta utbytesstudenten fr\u00e5n DDR som de skickade till USA", minns Janina. Att hon talade bra engelska var en ren slump. "Jag hade en engelskl\u00e4rare som vi alla var v\u00e4ldigt f\u00f6r\u00e4lskade i. Det var d\u00e4rf\u00f6r jag verkligen anstr\u00e4ngde mig!"<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I USA upplevde Janina raka motsatsen till Berlin f\u00f6re \u00e5terf\u00f6reningen. Hennes v\u00e4lb\u00e4rgade v\u00e4rdfamilj f\u00f6dde upp Angusboskap p\u00e5 en g\u00e5rd och Janinas rum var inrett i engelsk country house-stil. Som flicka fr\u00e5n DDR k\u00e4nde hon sig ibland som en fr\u00e4mling. Hennes v\u00e4rdsyster blev f\u00f6rskr\u00e4ckt \u00f6ver Janinas h\u00e5r i armh\u00e5lorna: "Hon sa \u00e5t mig att raka bort det med en g\u00e5ng, vilket jag gjorde f\u00f6r f\u00f6rsta g\u00e5ngen i mitt liv." Janina, \u00e5 andra sidan, f\u00f6rv\u00e5nades \u00f6ver sin v\u00e4rdsysters omfattande sminksessioner, j\u00e4ttestora mj\u00f6lkflaskor, potatischips och popcorn i hinkar och de totalt fyra tv-apparaterna i huset. "Allt var gigantiskt! Jag var i ett kapitalistiskt land av mj\u00f6lk och honung."<\/p>\n

Janina semestrade i Florida, \u00e5kte skidor i Colorado, upplevde Thanksgiving-bord som var fyllda med mat, och hon blev \u00f6verv\u00e4ldigad av den amerikanska julen. "Jag fick \u00f6ver 50 julklappar. Min v\u00e4rdmamma nj\u00f6t av att bjuda mig eftersom hon visste att vi inte hade n\u00e5got liknande bakom j\u00e4rnrid\u00e5n."<\/p>\n

I skolan blev Janina medlem i friidrottslaget och fick m\u00e5nga goda v\u00e4nner. Hon var f\u00f6rbluffad \u00f6ver att hon kunde v\u00e4lja \u00e4mnen som bilk\u00f6rning, matlagning eller f\u00f6r\u00e4ldraskap – och hon var f\u00f6rv\u00e5nad \u00f6ver hur lite hennes klasskamrater och deras f\u00f6r\u00e4ldrar visste om internationell politik och andra l\u00e4nder. "M\u00e5nga k\u00e4nde bara till Centraleuropa fr\u00e5n en tv-kanal om andra v\u00e4rldskriget som var mycket popul\u00e4r. Deras bild av Europa var fr\u00e5n 1940-talet." Men Janina var desto mer entusiastisk \u00f6ver matutbudet i skolans cafeteria: "De serverade hamburgare och varmkorv varje dag. Fullst\u00e4ndig skr\u00e4pmat, men v\u00e4ldigt trendigt p\u00e5 den tiden." Och hon \u00e4lskade amerikansk popkultur, hiphop och Prom. "Jag gick fr\u00e5n djupaste socialism till maximal kapitalism. Den niv\u00e5n av konsumism var underlig \u00e4ven f\u00f6r v\u00e4sterl\u00e4nningar fr\u00e5n Europa. Men samtidigt k\u00e4nde jag mig s\u00e5 \u00e4lskad av mina v\u00e4rdf\u00f6r\u00e4ldrar. Sedan dess har jag alltid haft en k\u00e4nsla av att vi \u00f6sttyskar kan k\u00e4nna oss hemma var som helst i
