5 reasons to go on a language trip

Mon May 06 2024

If you want to improve your foreign language skills, make new friends, and get to know another country and culture, you should go on a language trip! Learning a language in a place where it is spoken is so much more effective and fun than at home in school. In addition, you grow as a person when you travel abroad without your family, perhaps for the first time. Here are five reasons to choose a summer vacation out of the ordinary.

  1. You become more independent and confident.
When you go on a language trip and embark on that adventure on your own, you simply have to take responsibility for yourself. It's an opportunity to prove that you can handle things yourself. Because not only do you have to deal with new situations, new cultures, and another language – but you also have to adapt to a whole new group dynamic. Standing on your own two feet makes you more mature and improves your ability to take on new challenges!
  2. You improve your language skills.
Even if you study a foreign language at school, there's a big difference between regular classroom teaching and how you learn languages on a language trip. Practicing a language in a country where it is spoken gives you a head start, not only in terms of grammar and vocabulary, but also in expressions, body language, and comprehension. You hear the language being used all around you, read it everywhere, and use it when you buy ice cream, coffee, a soda, or anything else. After some time, you don't have to think, you just talk!
  3. You get to make friends from all over the world.
On a language trip, you will meet teenagers from several different countries. You will have the opportunity to make new international friends, whether you go alone or with a friend or two. Be inspired by them, share your thoughts and ideas, and stay connected. An international network is invaluable, both privately and when studying or working. Like when you're traveling next time and can sleep on a couch at a friend's house, instead of in a hotel!
  4. You get to know a new culture.
On a language trip, you get to experience much more of the country's culture than on a regular vacation. You have local teachers who bring their culture into the classroom, and you may experience new ways of learning. By comparing with your own culture and looking at it with new eyes, you learn a lot about yourself.
  5. You will experience completely new things.
When you go on a language trip, there are always lots of fun activities. For example, you will see new exciting sights, visit interesting places, try new foods, and maybe hear some new music.
