Students going to Brighton on a language trip in the summer of 2020 will have the option of travelling by train, rather than flying. Students from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany and France bound for Brighton will be able to hop on at different stops along the way, giving them the chance to see more on their journey and also get to know their fellow travellers before the start of the course. The trip will also include a 3-day stop in Paris on the way there and a 2-day visit to London on the way back.
This new option represents an important step on behalf of the company towards meaningful CSR.
"STS is always looking for ways to limit its carbon footprint while meeting the demand from a new generation of environmentally conscious younger travellers", says John Cedergårdh, CEO at STS Education.
The students who opt for the no-fly trip will be able not only to enjoy the added benefits but also feel proud of their choice to greatly reduce their impact on the environment and serve as an example to others.
Estimates from EcoPassenger.com suggest that opting for the train journey can reduce carbon dioxide and other harmful gas emissions by up to 90% when compared to the same journey by plane. Train travel also adds to the feeling of adventure and discovery inherent in these types of educational trips and reinforces the idea that they are more about the journey than the destination. It is also a ‘return to roots’ of sorts for the company. The first language trip in 1958 was to Mattsee in Austria, a journey made by train. With this new no-fly trip, STS continues to look for ways to further reduce their carbon footprint, while educating the next generation on sustainable travel.
