Tips for Future Exchange Students

Set Your Goals

It doesn’t have to be a long list, but it’s important to understand what you truly expect from your exchange. Before my trip, I made a “bucket list” and worked towards completing every point. These could be experiences you want to have, places you want to visit, foods you want to try, or stores you want to check out. It can be anything, but in my opinion, you should know why you’re going on an exchange in the first place.

Homesickness

I didn’t experience much homesickness, and I think several factors contributed to that. First, before my exchange, I convinced myself that I wouldn’t miss home because it would only get in the way of enjoying this amazing adventure. I kept telling myself: "I’ve spent 17 years of my life with my parents, so what is one year really?" I had also gone to summer and winter camps often, which helped me get used to being away from my family. Additionally, I lived with another exchange student, which made me feel like I wasn’t alone—there was someone else in exactly the same situation as me, and we could always talk about the challenges we both faced. I also only spoke to my parents once a week, which created a routine while also giving both sides some space.

Join Extracurricular Activities

Before my exchange, I was aware that sports play a huge role here, but I didn’t expect just how important they actually are. I was never really into sports, so I wasn’t convinced at first. However, I quickly realized that if I didn’t participate, my chances of making friends would be much lower. Teenagers in the U.S. dedicate most of their lives to school activities, so joining a team or club is the best way to spend time together and meet new people.

Don’t Judge

During your exchange, you will definitely come across many differences—whether in school or in your host family. The most important thing is not to judge but to try to understand and learn from them. At school, many people might ask you questions that seem silly to you, but it’s only because they’re curious about you and where you come from. Be open to people and the opportunities that await you! I’m rooting for your exchange experience—it will definitely be magical! ✨
