STS High School 14–18 years of age
Your application

Here’s how the application process works

#1 Apply online

Everything begins with your dream. Submit your application and together, we’ll find the perfect exchange program for you. We offer free guidance and you can call us multiple times before you make a decision.

Remember to apply well in advance in order to secure a place. A late application may also mean you have to pay an extra fee.

#2 Interview – you have been accepted

After your free, non-binding interview with us, you’ll get the big news: you’ve been accepted! Our high school experts will lead you through the following steps in the application process. Let the fun begin!

Keep in mind: the final approval of a student’s admission to a high school program in another country is ultimately made by the host country’s public or private school authorities, the STS office, and STS partner organizations abroad. Only when all criteria are met will the departure to the participant’s chosen country be guaranteed.

#3 Waiting and preparations

At this point, there is a bit of a wait. It’s the perfect time to prepare. Read about your host country, ask us your questions and attend our Pre-Departure Orientation. During this time, we will ask you to get a doctor’s certificate, any necessary vaccines, to write a personal letter, maybe to make a video greeting, to obtain signatures from your current school, and more. In some cases, your visa application process may begin at this stage. When it’s time to apply for a visa, we are here to guide you through the process, but you have to apply for your visa yourself, because it is a personal document. We are always available and you can get the help you need.

We can also put you in touch with our former students. They will give the best advice and can tell you all about their time as an exchange student.

A few months before your departure, we will invite you to an information meeting where we go through everything you need to know, in detail, before you leave for your year abroad. You are welcome to bring your parents to this meeting as well, because you will meet other students and parents. It is also a good opportunity to ask questions about the exciting adventure ahead.

#4 You’re assigned a host family

It’s time for more good news! Now we’ve found your host family. Get to know them a little better through FaceTime, Messenger, email, or other digital channels. Getting to know each other before you go is a perfect way to prepare.

It may also be a good time to start thinking about what to bring. But remember not to pack too much! You will want to buy a lot of clothes and other things while you’re there. Read our eight tips for things to have in your suitcase.

#5 Time to go

It’s time to go! We will schedule your train or plane tickets to your destination.

A Welcome Camp is at almost all destinations included in the program fees if you are going in the fall. Your host family and local representative will be ready to welcome you and give you the best possible cultural exchange. Enjoy!

We are just a phone call away

You can always call or email us. We’re here to answer all of your questions, and we’re more than happy to help.
